US president Donald Trump said on Saturday he plans to create an artificial intelligence (AI) force modelled on the Space Force he set up in his first term, and to name an AI czar, without detailing its structure, budget or authority, according to CNN, Newsweek, The Independent and Turkey’s Anadolu Agency.

In a Truth Social post, Trump wrote that his administration will ‘not in any way hinder or stifle the Growth of this incredible Industry’ and will instead ‘cherish it, help it, and watch over it, as it grows’, pointing to the existing criminal and civil justice system as the enforcement mechanism. The announcement came days after he called concerns about advanced AI a ‘hoax’, and in the week the United States and China discussed an AI incident notification mechanism in New York ahead of Thursday’s summit.
