The United States, Japan and South Korea reaffirmed on Monday, on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, their commitment to the “complete denuclearization” of North Korea and called on Pyongyang to resume dialogue, according to the State Department and South Korea’s foreign ministry.

The joint statement by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi and South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Hyun also reiterated the three countries’ commitment to the defense of Japan and South Korea and expressed support for Taiwan’s “meaningful participation” in international organizations, according to Reuters. The statement came three days before Xi Jinping’s state visit to Washington, scheduled for Thursday, September 24.
