Police in Evanston, a Chicago suburb, said they are investigating a Sunday case in which a man was detained by federal immigration agents and ended up in a hospital with injuries to his head, neck and teeth, and that agents later determined he was not the person they were seeking and that he is a US citizen.

According to the police account, the agent who spoke to officers identified himself as a federal agent conducting a fugitive investigation and said the man refused to provide identification and resisted detention. Witnesses told police they believed the agents were with US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE); the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) did not respond to a request for comment, according to The Guardian. The case came the same day an immigration agent shot and wounded a man in Austin, Texas.
