US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Washington has proposed a mechanism with China to notify each other of artificial intelligence incidents that threaten national security, for Donald Trump and Xi Jinping to consider at their meeting in Washington this week, according to NBC News, CNN and Al Jazeera.

Bessent said the two sides discussed setting up a bilateral AI dialogue focused on national security and that “moving from opaque to more transparency between the number one and the number two AI powers in the world is very important”. China’s state Xinhua news agency confirmed that Bessent and Vice Premier He Lifeng discussed issues “relating to AI”, without mentioning the US proposal. What would trigger a notification has not been disclosed.
