Hurricane Polo intensified to Category 5, the highest on the Saffir-Simpson scale, on Tuesday night, September 22, 2026, with maximum sustained winds of 165 mph (265 kph), and was centred about 210 miles (338 kilometres) south of Zihuatanejo off Mexico’s Pacific coast, according to the Associated Press, citing data from the US National Hurricane Center, which has active advisories for the storm.

The centre warned that tropical storm conditions were expected along the coasts of Guerrero, Michoacán and Colima, forecast 3 to 6 inches (8 to 15 centimetres) of rain with a risk of mudslides, and said Polo should track west-northwest without making landfall, according to AP. It is the third Category 5 hurricane of the Pacific season after Genevieve and Lowell, and Colorado State University researcher Philip Klotzbach attributed the rapid intensification to El Niño.
