The 18 suspects extradited from Haiti on Sunday appeared in a Miami federal court on Monday, where prosecutors unsealed an indictment describing the plot to kill President Jovenel Moïse in 2021 as financed with fraudulent loans from the US pandemic aid programme.

Thirty people have been indicted in the case so far, according to federal prosecutor Jason Reding Quinones, and among those extradited is Joseph Félix Badio, a former anti-corruption official at Haiti’s Justice Ministry described as a central suspect. Moïse was shot dead at his residence on 7 July 2021 by a group of about 20 Colombian mercenaries, and in May four men were convicted in Miami of conspiracy in the case, all linked to Florida-based security firm CTU.
