Guatemala's army received 2,000 Colt M4A1 rifles from the United States, part of a US$ 5,033,645 purchase funded with the country's own money through the Foreign Military Sales programme, according to The Rio Times. The shipment also includes 59 M240 machine guns and 57 grenade launchers, 14,035 items in all — a figure President Bernardo Arévalo described as more than 14,000 units, though 30-round magazines make up most of the count. Washington had restricted weapons sales to Guatemala's army since 1977 over civil-war human rights abuses, and the Guatemalan government announced the restriction had been lifted in March 2026. The weapons are destined for a new special jungle operations brigade in Petén, a region bordering Mexico and a drug-trafficking route.
