The shipment also includes 59 M240 machine guns and 57 grenade launchers, 14,035 items in all — a figure President Bernardo Arévalo described as more than 14,000 units, though 30-round magazines make up most of the count. Washington had restricted weapons sales to Guatemala's army since 1977 over civil-war human rights abuses, and the Guatemalan government announced the restriction had been lifted in March 2026. The weapons are destined for a new special jungle operations brigade in Petén, a region bordering Mexico and a drug-trafficking route.
